Recycling of Lithium-ion Battery

[Company / organization] TAIHEIYO CEMENT CORPORATION

Time started

Start of business: April, 2020

Technology and business model

The technology has been developed in collaboration with Matsuda Sangyo Co., Ltd. to launch the business. With the support of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the Ministry of the Environment, and Tsuruga City, the technology has been developed and demonstrated. The business is related to the recycling of large lithium-ion batteries for automotive and stationary use. The goal is to recycle 100% of the metals, plastics, electrode materials (rare metals), etc., that make up the packs and modules of large lithium-ion batteries. For 100% recycling, parts of the battery pack that can be easily disassembled are disassembled in advance. For the modules themselves, which are difficult to disassemble and crush as they are, the flammable electrolytes inside the batteries are detoxified by roasting without oxidizing the metals that make up the batteries. After the detoxification by roasting, various metals and electrode materials are separated by crushing and classifying, and residues that cannot be recovered as resources are thermally recycled in the cement manufacturing process.

This technology, in conjunction with the cement manufacturing process, can detoxify fluorine compounds contained in batteries at low cost, and can also reduce the energy required for roasting because it makes maximum use of the heat capacity of the batteries. In addition, since it is a continuous batch process, batteries with different electrode materials can be processed efficiently.

Achievements and goals

Currently, the facility installed at Tsuruga Cement, a group company, is capable of processing 10 tons per day.
