Basic values and policies for initiatives towards circular economy

(1) Taiheiyo Cement Group aims to play a leading role in developing a sustainable future for the earth. Its philosophy is to conduct business activities in harmony not only with economic development, but also with environmental considerations and social contributions, to strive for harmony with the global environment, and to actively contribute to the realization of a circular society. The circular economy initiatives are one of the Group's business strategies to contribute to the development of a circular society.

(2) Recognizing that the earth's resources are limited and that there are restrictions from environmental impacts, Taiheiyo Cement Group aims to play a leading role in developing a future for the earth that will allow for lasting development not only for the present generation but also for future generations. To this end, the corporation will not only contribute to economic development by generating profits, but also contribute to the circular economy by conducting business activities in harmony with the environment and contributing to the society, thereby enhancing its corporate value.

Market opportunities and our strengths in circular business

Taiheiyo Cement Group has been contributing to the creation of a sustainable circular society through a system that utilizes various types of waste as energy and raw materials, making the most of the characteristics of the cement industry.

The corporation is now moving away from the conventional concept of "individual optimization," in which each materials company selects technologies and operating conditions that are appropriate for its capital investment and operating costs, toward "total optimization," in which the selection of technologies and operating conditions is reviewed to the extent that they do not worsen the profitability of each company. In addition, the corporation is promoting a concept called “resource complexes” that aims to raise the level of resource recycling and contribute to the circular economy, which will lead to increased corporate value.

Setting indices/targets

Taiheiyo Cement Group is contributing to the construction of a circular society by recycling various types of waste, including wide-area treatment of disaster waste, in the cement manufacturing process.

However, in recent years, as social systems and industries have advanced more, there has been an increase in the generation of waste that is difficult to treat and that contains heavy metals, which has placed a burden on the operation of waste disposal sites and the conservation of natural resources. Therefore, the Group sees the contribution to the transition to the circular economy as an opportunity and is promoting in a multifaceted manner the conversion of these wastes into cement resources and the recovery of useful metals, using the amount of effectively used wastes as an indicator.

By promoting these initiatives, we hope to contribute to the establishment of a circular economy, including the advancement of a circular society, and contribute to the sustainability of such society.

Implementation system

The Group's management structure is based on the Board of Directors and the Board of Auditors, and an executive officer system has been introduced to separate management decision-making, monitoring and supervision functions from business execution. The CSR Management Committee, chaired by the President and consisting of all directors and executive officers with executive responsibility, is comprised of seven committees related to environmental management, quality management, risk management, information security, human rights and labor practices, safety and health, and communication with stakeholders. The CSR Management Committee reviews the annual plans and implementation reports of the subordinate committees to improve the way the corporation conducts its business activities from the perspective of CSR and ESG, and to strengthen the corporate governance.

The status of planning and implementation of the initiatives to build a circular economy is reviewed by the CSR Management Committee through the aforementioned Environmental Management Committee. The Environmental Management Committee is chaired by the Managing Executive Officer in charge of production and facilities, with the participation of the general managers of production, facilities, environmental business, research and development, and other divisions as committee members, ensuring effective activities and information sharing.
