Eco-friendly package "Biomass ECO Cup"

[Company / organization] NISSIN FOODS HOLDINGS CO., LTD.

Beginning period

The NISSIN FOODS Group began using the Biomass ECO Cup in December 2019.

Our technology and Business models

In April 2020, the NISSIN FOODS Group has formulated Earth Food Challenge 2030 environmental strategy. There are two pillars of this strategy. They are “Erath Material Challenge (the challenge to protect the environment surrounding global resources and make effective use of resources)” and “Green Food Challenge (the challenge to reduce CO2 emissions in all business activities)”. As one of our efforts to meet these challenges, we are promoting the shift to the Biomass ECO Cups that use biomass plastic that contributes to resource circulation. The world's first instant noodles in a cup, Nissin Cup Noodle, was initially packaged in foamed PS cups, but in 2008, we switched to the ECO Cup made from paper, a recyclable resource, to significantly reduce the amount of plastic used. In December 2019, we began switching to the Biomass ECO Cup, which replace the plastic used in a part of the cup with biomass plastic that contributes to resource circulation. By introducing biomass plastic, we have raised the biomass content to 81% compared to the conventional the ECO Cup, almost halved the amount of petrochemical-derived plastic used per cup, and achieved 16% reduction in lifecycle CO2 emissions. And all Cup Noodles brand products will be switched during fiscal 2022 (ended March 31, 2022). As a food manufacturer, we will continue to provide people with safe and tasty foods, while promoting resource circulation of packaging materials and developing solutions to social issues.

Target

We are planning to use the Biomass ECO Cup for all products in Cup Noodles series within fiscal 2022 (ended March 31, 2022).
