Food waste recycling project
[Company / organization] Terrarem Group Co., Ltd.
Time started (or to be started)
We started food waste recycling for power generation project from 2006.
We implemented city gas supply demonstration project from 2011.
We are starting utilize a part of dried sludge as fertilizer from 2023.
Technology and business model
Bionergy’s Jonanjima Plant successfully recycles food wastes that come with container packagings generated in the Tokyo metropolitan area. We apply wet methane fermentation technology to produce biogas from organic components of food waste, produced biogas is primarily used for power generation supply to the market as a renewable energy resource. Our strengths are based on our accumulated long-term expertise in methane bacteria, our experience in operating the facility 24 hours a day, and great cooperation of our customer in sorting food waste resource.
In recent years, we have been working on composting business that uses fermentation residue. It is well-known that digestion liquid after fermentation process can be used as fertilizer, however, its market demand in the metropolitan area where the plant located was few, and its efficiency was uncleared. However, the market environment changes when the crude oil price is rising, there is growing interest in using our dried digestion residue as fertilizer recently. Furthermore, we have improved a part of equipment that enable them to be used as fertilizer. At our Jonanjima plant, digestion liquid is efficiently solidified and dried by utilizing residual heat recovered from the co-generation system. Currently, farmers in Hokkaido have started actively using our fertilizer. We look forward to achieving even better results in the future.
