Basic values and policies regarding efforts toward a circular economy as a corporation

Based on the spirit of the Toyota Principles since its foundation, since the 1970s, when motorization was founded, Toyota has promoted the "establishment of model social systems" to prepare for the mass generation of end-of-life vehicles. Toyota has also promoted "sustainable recycling and other businesses" that regard cars as a valuable resource.

In 2015, as part of Toyota's Environmental Challenge 2050, we set forth the challenge of establishing a recycling-based society and system, and are working to prevent the pollution of discarded cars, to control resource risks, and to address global warming.

Market opportunities and the company's strengths in recycling-oriented businesses

To prevent the environmental load caused by End-of-life vehicles, Toyota launched and has been promoting the Toyota Global 100 Dismantlers* Project, to establish social systems for appropriate treatment of End-of-life vehicle.

We are also promoting the Toyota Global Car-to-Car Recycle Project so that we can utilize resources from End-of-life vehicles for manufacturing new vehicles. Through these initiatives, we will contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9 (Industry, Innovation, Infrastructure) and 12 (Responsible Production and Consumption).

Setting of indicators and targets

Toyota announced the Seventh Toyota Environmental Action Plan-2025 Target, a new five-year action plan to achieve the Environmental Challenge 2050. Under this new target, we will accelerate environmental initiatives and contribute to the realization of a sustainable society including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The details of our plan are as follows.

<Toyota Global 100 Dismantlers Project>

・Complete set up of 15 model facilities for appropriate treatment and recycling of End-of-life vehicles

・Continuously accelerate easy-to-dismantle designs

<Toyota Global Car-to-Car Recycle Project>

・Establish a safe and efficient system for battery 3R (Rebuilt, Reuse and Recycle), eyeing the widespread use of electrified vehicles

・Develop technologies to utilize recycled materials (especially plastics) in accordance with the conditions in each region

Implementation Structure

In 2008, the Resource Recycling Committee was established to discuss and promote future ideals, scenarios, and specific initiatives for realizing a recycling-oriented society.

Working groups have been established according to each area, such as future scenarios, social system construction, and technological development, to promote activities and share them internally.

We also share the above efforts with all employees as needed on our in-house site.
